Personally I think it is a place to create a WOW and to embody your style. It also has to be eminently practical - where should guests put their coat? Do you have indoor shoes for guests to wear in Winter? Where do your family store their outerwear? Yet also, it is a great place for creating style with an umbrella stand, hats and market bags. I also don’t enjoy a space that is too cluttered as you inevitably chat upon greeting guests here, as well as prolonged farewells. Here’s how to choose the perfect colour for your hallway and I’m sharing some styling advice to elevate its overall aesthetic. Draw it on a piece of paper, as if from an aerial viewpoint, with a compass so you can see which direction the natural light is coming from and where potential storage could be.

Many houses face the street or road they are on, instead of being oriented north-south. Therefore, it is difficult to predict how the paint will react to the light. Use these tips to guide you:

North-facing rooms receive cool, indirect light throughout the day. Colours may appear slightly bluish or grayish in this light, so it's best to choose warm and saturated colors to counterbalance the coolness.

South-facing rooms receive the most sunlight throughout the day. They tend to have warm and bright light. In these rooms, you can experiment with a wide range of colours, including cool and warm tones.

East-facing rooms are bathed in soft morning light. Colours may appear cooler and slightly bluish during this time. Consider using warm and soft hues to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

West-facing rooms receive warm and intense light in the afternoon and evening. Colours may appear warmer and slightly orange-toned during this time. Opt for cooler and soothing colours to balance the warmth.

Embrace Light and Bright Tones

While I’m all for dark and moody, hallways are often narrow and lacking in natural light. To counteract this, opt for light and bright colour schemes. Pale neutrals like whites, creams, and light grays or blush pinks can create an illusion of space and make your hallway feel more open and airy. If you still want the drama, you can add light coloured panelling and darker walls or vice versa.

Bear in mind your floor treatment

The colours you choose for your walls should naturally suit the floor treatment that you have. if you have a complicated floor tiling, it will be better to go for neutral walls to bring focus to the flooring. Equally if you have a dark flooring or a light flooring you should opt for the opposite tone on the walls.

Consider the Mood

Think about the mood you want to create in your hallway. Do you prefer a calm and serene space or a vibrant and energetic one? Soft pastels and muted tones can evoke tranquility, while bold and saturated colours can infuse energy and personality into the space.

Take into account the adjoining rooms and the overall theme of your home. Coordinating the hallway colour with the adjacent rooms can create a cohesive flow throughout your home. If you have a specific theme or style in mind, incorporate elements of it in your hallway through colour choices. For example, coastal chic, English country, bohemian, Art Deco, glamour …..

Playing with Contrast

Just ensure that the colours complement each other and don't overwhelm the space. Period properties often have a dado rail that you opt to colour drench or use as the point of contrast.

To maximize the light in your hallway, incorporate reflective surfaces like mirrors or metallic accents. They can bounce light around the space and create an illusion of depth. Additionally, they add a touch of elegance and style to your hallway. Mirror styles can dramatically change the mood of the space, evoking a certain style. I once spray painted my hallway table with a copper top on Annie Sloan graphite base. It looked dramatic and unusual, yet cost relatively little to make the impact.

Don’t forget wallpaper

There are really amazing wallpapers on the market today. From exciting murals, to stripes or antique florals, they are artworks in themselves. It can be fun to collect some samples and see what works best with the mood that you want to create.

Styling Tips for Hallways

Opt for slimline furniture and storage solutions to maximize space. Ensure it is not a place that will become a dumping ground for keys, golf tees, school bag, handbags ….. it should remain artistic and thoughtfully styled.
Consider adding a wooden bench or seats so that people can sit to put on their shoes.
Scent is also important as you arrive into someones home. Whether you provide that with fresh flowers, scented candles, reed diffusers, pot pourri or oils, take a moment to opt for a signature seasonal scent
Use lighting strategically to highlight artwork or architectural features. Paint the inside of lampshades in a soft pink to create a gentle light. In winter, Ireland has more darkness than daylight, so lamps will be welcoming. It is worth getting your electrician to wire the lamps to the main switch that you will turn on as you enter the space from outside, so you are not running around attempting to turn them on. You can use a table lamp or wall lamps better than an overhead light to spread the light prettily.
Add a runner or rug to bring warmth and texture to your hallway. To avoid it slipping, make sure than you place an underlay or grips beneath it too.
Display artwork or photographs along the walls to personalize the space. Big pieces of art, or lots of frames in matching colours will create a sense of interest and personality.
Incorporate functional storage solutions like hooks or a console table for keys and everyday essentials but make sure they are neat and pretty or preferably concealed behind doors.
Choose a large plant to bring life to the area too.
Consider welcoming door mats inside and outside the front door.
