A Magical Summer Evening Picnic in the Garden by Candlelight

Even in Ireland …Summer evenings are perfect for creating enchanting moments under the stars! Especially the Northern lights show that we’ve just been treated to. However, that isn’t an every-year occurrence so … imagine a picturesque garden setting, softened by the flickering glow of candlelight, as you enjoy a romantic picnic. Let me take you on a journey first to some romantic movies and books that have featured this dreamy setting, and then give you some tips on creating the perfect ambiance using lovely Irish linen (of course!) and other decorations, and offer simple yet delectable menu ideas to elevate your picnic experience.

Garden Picnics in Romantic Movies and Books

Candlelit dinners in the garden have long been a popular scene in romantic movies and books. Ever a dreamer, here are some of my favourites. Why not then grab the inspiration and create one in your own garden or terrace, or if you live in a city, picnic in the park …

"The Notebook" The iconic scene where Noah and Allie share a candlelit dinner in the garden, surrounded by the beauty of nature, perfectly captures the essence of love and passion. This story is endlessly beautiful.

"Under the Tuscan Sun" Obviously with warmer weather than the norm in Ireland, dining outdoors is a more regular thing. The enchanting garden scenes in this movie portray the magic of dining by candlelight amidst such a serene backdrop. It is apt for creating a whimsical atmosphere for the love to blossom.

"Pride and Prejudice" If ever a story launched a thousand romances, the timeless tale of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet features a charming candlelit dinner in the garden. I love the elegance and intimacy of the setting.

“Chocolat” The scene where Vianne and Roux share their candlelit diner in the courtyard - the intimacy of the setting enhancing their passion.

How to set the scene for your garden candlelit picnic

Use a beautiful Irish linen tablecloth and napkins to add an element of elegance to your picnic. The softness and elegance of linen is unmatched. Especially if you have some heirloom linens to share. I like to use an oversized table cloth so it can drape onto the ground elegantly.

You can then use hurricane lamps, if there is a breeze, to house your candles. Place candle holders or lanterns strategically around your picnic area to create a warm and inviting glow. Another idea is to opt for flickering LED candles for safety and convenience. Why not go one step further and hang delicate fairy lights or string lights in the surrounding trees or bushes to create a really magical ambiance. This will make such an enchanted setting! Even though it is dark or twilight, still incorporate fresh flowers as the centerpiece. Choose blooms that complement the colours of the garden and add a fragrant touch to the atmosphere. It can be as simple as a little bud vase or more extravagant. Alternatively have some planter pots around that are filled with fragrant seasonal blooms.

Menu Ideas for your garden picnic

When planning your menu, aim for simplicity and taste. These would be my choice of menu ideas that are both delicious and easy to prepare.

Caprese Skewers Skewer fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, and basil leaves. Drizzle with balsamic glaze for a refreshing starter or side dish.

Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad Prepare grilled chicken breast slices on a bed of crisp romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, and homemade Caesar dressing. Or you can take slices from a rotisserie chicken, add some soft boiled eggs, anchovies and some crispy sourdough croutons.

Mediterranean Pasta Salad Toss cooked pasta with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, feta cheese, fresh herbs and a zesty champagne dressing (1/4 cup champagne vinegar, 2 tbsp honey, or maple syrup, 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard, 1/2 cup olive oil, Salt and pepper, to taste) This refreshing salad is one of my absolute favourites for a perfect summer picnic.

Halloumi and chargrilled vegetables.I adore this combination of soft roasted vegetables and salty chewy halloumi. A basil pesto, chimicurri sauce or salsa verde on the side will make it extra fabulous.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries Indulge in a classic romantic treat by dipping fresh strawberries in melted chocolate. You can opt for dark / milk / white chocolate or a election of all 3. A simpler preparation method is to arrange the strawberries (still with their green tops on) on a plate and drizzle the melted chocolate all over. What a treat!

Don’t forget the drinks either - champagne would go well, or a nice light rosé, or a sensational white Rioja. If you want to stay off the alcohol, I can recommend sparkling water with elderflower cordial.

So what are you waiting for (the weather probably!) to immerse yourself in the magic of a summer evening picnic in the garden by candlelight. So, grab your loved one, embrace the beauty of nature, and let the flickering candlelight set the stage for a truly memorable evening. Here's to unforgettable summer nights filled with love and romance!
